From Preschool to High School: A Comprehensive Overview of Stamford American

Students thrive when their education is continuous and consistent, fostering both academic excellence and personal growth. Those who remain at the same school for an extended period of time are able to engage more deeply with their learning and form meaningful, long-lasting relationships with teachers and peers. Consistency in educational philosophy and curriculum allows students to build on their existing knowledge and improve their academic performance as they progress.

This continuity is particularly vital for international students, who often face unique challenges such as frequent relocations, cultural transitions, and learning in a second language. Without the proper support, these factors can impact both academic achievement and social development. International schools are designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps students overcome these challenges and complete their educational journey with confidence.

At Stamford American International School in Singapore, we offer an educational pathway from Early Years to High School. We are dedicated to ensuring every student feels fully integrated into our school community, regardless of their background or their progress in their learning journey. Even with over 3,000 students across two campuses, we maintain the supportive, close-knit environment akin to a smaller school, promoting strong values and providing the individualized support needed for students to realize their full potential.

In this article, we’ll explore Stamford American’s distinctive approach to education and student development at each stage of learning:

  • Early Learning Village
  • Elementary School
  • Middle School
  • Preparatory Course for Secondary School (PCS)
  • High School
  • Co-Curricular Activities at Stamford
  • Stamford American provides international students in Singapore with a seamless learning environment

Early Learning Village

At Stamford American, the educational journey begins at our Early Learning Village, purposefully designed to nurture young learners from 2 months to 6 years old. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which emphasizes experiential and self-guided learning, we view children as capable, curious, and eager to explore their surroundings. Here, children are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning, with teachers serving as supportive guides who facilitate rather than direct their experiences.

The Early Learning Village’s thoughtfully designed spaces foster exploration and discovery. Open areas, natural wooden structures, and abundant light create a welcoming, safe, and inspiring environment. Flexible classroom layouts and modular furniture allow teachers to adapt the space for different activities and group sizes, creating a dynamic environment that responds to children’s interests. From reading corners to art tables and science exploration stations, each area is designed to ignite curiosity and support varied learning experiences.

Our curriculum aligns with the Creative Curriculum from Pre-Nursery to Pre-Kindergarten and follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Kindergarten 1 and 2. This approach introduces inquiry-based learning early on, developing critical thinking skills that will serve students throughout their educational journey. In addition to academic readiness, we place a strong focus on emotional and social growth, ensuring that each child is supported in becoming a well-rounded individual, fully prepared for the next stages of learning at Stamford American.

Elementary School

As students transition from the Early Learning Village to Elementary School, they step into a more structured academic environment that builds on the skills they’ve developed in their early years. Our Elementary School follows the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 6-11, offering a holistic approach to learning.

In Elementary School, we focus on developing essential skills in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. These disciplines are then integrated into broader units of inquiry, connecting learning to real-world contexts. For example, a unit on environmental sustainability might bring together science, geography, and language arts, helping students understand how these disciplines work together in practical situations. This interdisciplinary approach deepens understanding, making learning more engaging and meaningful for our students.

Middle School

At Stamford American, our Middle School program follows the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework, combined with an American curriculum and AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards. This stage builds on the inquiry-based approach from earlier years while helping students apply their learning to real-world situations.

Our students engage in criteria-based assessments and have opportunities to connect with broader communities. While academic achievement is important, our focus extends beyond test scores. We aim to develop a deeper understanding that prepares students for future success. As they progress, students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning, fostering independence and critical thinking.

Preparatory Course for Secondary School (PCS)

Preparatory Course for Secondary School (PCS) is a 20-week program designed for non-native English language learners, offering focused language support while introducing students to key academic subjects they will encounter in secondary school. Each day, students receive seven hours of instruction in subjects such as mathematics, science, literature, and humanities, all taught within the IB MYP framework. PCS helps students enhance their English proficiency while developing the analytical skills essential to the IB curriculum.

The PCS program is built on three key pillars:

  • Language and Academic Development: We provide intensive language instruction alongside academic subjects to prepare students for a challenging learning environment.
  • Well-Being: We create a nurturing space that fosters confidence, belonging, and a smooth transition into school life.
  • International-Mindedness: Students engage in Stamford’s multicultural environment, gaining a deeper appreciation of diverse cultures and perspectives, while developing global awareness.

By the end of the PCS, students are fully prepared to enter secondary school and become part of the Stamford American community.

High School

At Stamford American, our High School program offers two graduation pathways, allowing students to personalize their education based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. Whether aiming for university, acquiring technical skills, or blending both, each student can chart an academic path that suits their aspirations.

Our students can choose between the following pathways:

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP): A rigorous, globally recognized program that fosters critical thinking, research skills, and global awareness. This pathway is ideal for students seeking a broad and well-rounded education with an international focus.
  • Individualized Pathway: A flexible option that allows students to tailor their coursework by combining IB, AP, BTEC, or Stamford courses, aligning their education with personal academic and career goals.

No matter the path, students experience an academically challenging program that integrates the best of American and international education. This interdisciplinary approach ensures they develop both the practical skills and academic knowledge essential for success in higher education and beyond.

Co-Curricular Activities at Stamford

At Stamford American, we believe that education goes beyond the classroom, and our extensive co-curricular activities (CCAs) play a key role in shaping well-rounded individuals. With over 350 CCAs available for students from Pre-K to Grade 12, we offer opportunities for every child to explore their interests. In High School, students also have the chance to form student-led clubs, pursuing their passions while making a positive impact on the community through organizations like Green Lions, Gawad Kalinga, and Global Smiles.

Our CCA program provides flexibility, allowing students to select activities that fit their interests and schedules while balancing their academic commitments. These experiences help develop critical life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication—essential for future success, both personally and professionally.

Some of the activities we offer include:

  • Sports: Soccer, basketball, swimming, tennis, and more.
  • Performing Arts: Drama, dance, choir, and music ensembles.
  • Visual Arts: Painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture.
  • Technology and Innovation: Robotics, coding, and engineering clubs.
  • Academic Clubs: Debate, Model United Nations, and science clubs.
  • Community Service: Environmental initiatives, charity work, and cultural exchange programs.

Through these opportunities, students at Stamford American grow as individuals, building the confidence and skills they need to succeed in life beyond school.
