IB Primary Years Programme

Introduction to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally recognized course designed for students aged 3 to 12. As a premier IB PYP school in Singapore, this program offers a holistic learning experience that nurtures the whole child. It emphasizes the development of young learners as inquirers, fostering both academic and personal growth and encouraging exploration of global issues to cultivate international-mindedness.

What is the Primary Years Programme?

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed to meet the educational needs of young learners, encouraging them to engage with the world around them as active inquirers. The program focuses on international-mindedness, lifelong learning, and real-life applications, allowing students to appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures.

Age Group

The IB PYP is designed for students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 5, covering early childhood and elementary education.

Key Features

  • Encourages international-mindedness by helping students appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures.
  • Promotes a positive attitude towards learning through inquiry, fostering lifelong learners.
  • Reflects real-life learning by integrating in-depth inquiries beyond traditional subjects.
  • Focuses on holistic development, supporting intellectual, physical, emotional, and ethical growth.

Philosophy & Approach

The PYP philosophy is based on the belief that children are naturally curious and capable learners. The program encourages independent learning and creativity, offering students choices and fostering ownership over their learning experiences. Through an inquiry-based approach, the PYP encourages cognitive, social, and emotional development, aligning with each child’s unique learning pace and promoting a love for lifelong learning.

Curriculum Framework

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a dynamic international curriculum framework for students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 5, designed to spark curiosity and foster a love for learning.

At Stamford American, students benefit from an inclusive, inquiry-based approach that supports diverse learning styles, ensuring education is meaningful for every child. Beyond academics, the PYP emphasizes holistic development, nurturing students’ social, emotional, physical, and cultural growth.

Benefits

A recent study conducted in Singapore and Australia highlights the effectiveness of the IB PYP framework in building strong foundations in literacy, with students performing at or above levels of comparable groups in terms of school readiness. Students in the IB PYP have demonstrated a faster development of essential learning skills, supporting their academic and social development through an inquiry-based curriculum.

The Next Step After the IB PYP

After completing the Primary Years Programme (PYP), students are well-prepared to transition to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP builds on the foundation established in the PYP, continuing to emphasize inquiry-based learning, global awareness, and holistic development. By fostering a deeper understanding of core subjects and encouraging students to make connections between their learning and real-world applications, the MYP supports students in becoming active, lifelong learners.

The transition to MYP allows students to further develop skills such as critical thinking, research, communication, and self-management—skills that are introduced in the PYP and expanded upon in the MYP. As they progress through the MYP, students are encouraged to take more ownership of their learning and begin to explore specific academic interests that will prepare them for future studies in high school and beyond.
